Fouls (Otetsuki お手つき)
1) A foul is committed if a player touches any card on the floor when a Kara-fuda is read. A Kara-fuda
is a card that is not in either Jin (陣, territory).
Remember, each players start with 25 cards in front of him or her. So 50 cards are on the floor. But the reciter selects from the 100 poems at random, so half of the poems recited are not on the floor. (Recall that Kara 空 means "empty")
The foul is called "Otetsuki", and a player who commits Otetsuki has to receive one card from the opponent's Jin .

2) If a player touches any cards in the different Jin from the recited card, it is a foul. If the card that is read was in the opponent’s Jin , but a player touches his or her own Jin , that too is a foul (Otetsuki). As a penalty, the player receives one card from the opponent's Jin .

3) If a player touches any other cards in the same Jin where the correct card is placed, it is NOT a foul. That why the Fuda-oshi technique is effective.

4) If the recited card is a kara-fuda, but a player touches both Jin, that is a double foul (Double Otetsuki). In this case, the player receives two cards from the opponent.
